NO
The word NO
we've been taught is a profane word
NO -- a simple word
that no one can accept
when heard, there is an immediate
rush to negotiate a better outcome
What's wrong with accepting NO
as an answer
it can actually free us
not bind us
it can be liberating
it can be temporary
or final
it can save us from a
worse outcome
NO -- has almost disappeared
from our culture as an answer
it prevents rather than allows
the simple use of NO
without a discussion
without an explanation
can be good to hear
and good to say
NO -- does not have
to be said in anger
just a quiet, simple NO
is so unacceptable in our society
NO. is a complete sentence
NO can bring peace
can bring quiet
can bring tranquility

Back in the day, the idioms for female behavior most often used were in phrases like "you catch more flies with sugar than vinegar" or "little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice." The word 'no' and 'nice' were not associated for feminine. In males, however, it denoted assertiveness, authority and power. Once upon a time "Father Knows Best" and "The Joy of Cooking" were what American marriages strived for.
Gloria Steinem and "The Women's Movement" weren't a natural progression of changing ideals, but a revolution! Old habits die hard. 'No' still carries the badge of negativity, uncompromising and 'bitchy' when emphatically stated by a woman. I still find myself trapped in 'avoidance' rather than asserting the power of 'no'. I will say it, but only when all else fails. Yet, as I've matured, I've thought about the times I've been told 'no', and though I may not like it initially, rarely have I not come to the realization that I respect the person who has been honest, straightforward and sure enough to just say no.
This piece struck a chord with me, Suzette. It is amazing how such a small word carries so much power when used, not manipulatively, but honestly for it's legitimate purpose. Awesome, provocative, and important message, Suzette.
